About

Universal Access to Information

Signpost Founded AI prototyping lab to test how to use AI safely to help people in distress through prototypes to solve age-old problems in the aid sector. We will use a consortium approach to de-risk and evaluate the effectiveness of generative AI in testing environments, then deploy the best technology within our information services and beyond.

  • Partnership: Global consortium partnership with aid organizations, governments, tech companies, research institutions, and news media, casting a big tent.

  • Prototyping: Practical prototyping lab to develop, deploy, and scale (within Signpost) cutting-edge AI tools to address humanitarian challenges and enhance aid.

  • Impact Evaluation: Practical impact research to evaluate the quality of AI-generated information against human information and relative returns on investment.

  • Research Dissemination: Regularly dissemination of practical toolkits to provide humanitarian workers with AI development principles and guidelines for building on their own.

  • Advocacy: Direct communication with and regular public advocacy with technology companies about how to make AI technology support humanitarian clients better and be more just.

Signpost

Accurate, accessible and timely information

The Signpost Project: From its inception in 1933 with founder Albert Einstein, the IRC has been at the forefront of humanitarian innovation. Following in this tradition, the Signpost Project, founded in 2015, has rapidly become the largest community-driven information service in the aid sector; and through its groundbreaking use of technology, Signpost is also making a name for itself as a sector-leading innovation program. Having won the UN SDG Action  Awards and secured a place as a finalist at South by Southwest’s social impact awards Signpost is poised to continue scaling to a truly global level.

Leveraging evidence-based methods for building community-led information programs, best-in-class technology tools, and web-based channels for communication, Signpost has already reached over 80 million people with information products and has nearly 13 million users in over 20 countries on 5 continents. With its sprawling but simple digital architecture, Signpost is a vessel to scale additional innovations across the aid sector, ensuring sustainability and scale. As a consortium of the IRC, Mercy Corps, and Internews with a multitude of partners, the Signpost project has the unique flexibility to provide sector-wide benefits as a common good.
